Turbulence: How Christ’s BirthShook Things Up
Turbulence is considered by many to be a disruption in the relatively calm flow of air. It’s the reason some people quit flying and others are terrified of flying. Generally, it’s a “buckle your seatbelt till all is clear” kind of interruption.

Most Christmas celebrations show the wise men, shepherds and angels all glowing in their affirmation of the Christ child, as they should be. However, simmering just beyond the celebration was a world that became unsettled by His arrival. This was exemplified by Herod’s tragic pronouncement of death for all baby boys, which forced the young Messiah’s family to flee to Egypt.
Every encounter between heaven and hell has Satan either fighting or running. While Jesus is the Prince of Peace, He is also the establisher of a new regime, and is unwilling to compromise His kingdom. He rules through light, goodness, compassion and courage. Every single Gospel book records his intervention in the Temple, where he exploded with anger at the exploitation of others by religious leaders. He constantly expelled the demonic stronghold over bodies and minds and religion.

Christmas actually represents a turbulence initiated by heaven. One that rights wrongs and establishes righteousness as the target, while defending the weak, the orphan and the widow. It clearly draws a line in the sand against religious oppression, sickness and disease. It declares war against hell and all of its plans and schemes.
Christmas is all about celebrating the birth of a baby—but I dare not forget that this baby was born as a freedom fighter. Casting aside all concern for His own wellbeing, He put His life on the line for the future of others. He ultimately paid the highest price. And while I put up lights, sing carols and exchange gifts, I might also want to buckle up and continue this battle against the forces of evil, so that all those around me have a fighting chance to live a life destined for them by God Himself.
Hail the Heaven-born Prince of Peace
Hail the Son of righteousness
Light and life to all He brings
Risen with healing in His wings ...
Hark! The herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King
