INTRODUCTION:
Holiness is one of the attributes of God – Exod. 15:11. It is the most sparkling jewel of His Crown. Holiness is also the name by which God is known. Isa. 6:3; Psa. 111:9; John 6:10: alas, holiness is not a popular subject among the reprobates today, but it is essentially important to us who desire to be like Jesus in holiness – John 8:46. However, we are not gathered tonight to teach on “sins that Paul said should not be mentioned among the Saints of God but rather on spiritual sins which we consciously or unconsciously often commit. These are called “DEADLY SINS” because they are damning, deceptive and will hinder us from going to heaven.

1. PRIDE

Definition:
It is an overwhelming opinion of one’s qualities, merits, characters, etc. over and above others. It is the opposite of humility.
It is also an undue self-esteem or inordinate superiority of oneself (Luke 18:11-12)

Source:
  – Pride emanates from man’s human heart (Matt. 15:19-20) and reflects in one’s
-Thought (Prov. 16:5; 10:5)
-Word (Psa. 12:3; Isa. 14:12-15 and Dan. 3:15)
-Actions (Prov. 29:23; Dan. 5:17-30; Luke 14:8-9)

Type:
– Pride takes various forms
-Spiritual Pride – Lucifer/God (Isa. 14:12-15)
-Man against God (Exo. 5:1-2; Rom. 1:19-32; Isa. 48:11)
-Man against man (Luke 18:10-14; I Sam. 17:41-42)
-Intellectual Pride – undue consciousness of one’s attainments, and qualities over others, which at times serve as hindrance (I Cor. 8:1-2; Acts 17:18-32; I Tim. 6:3-4; Prov. 3:5; 26:12; Luke 18:14)
-Material Pride – as depicted in (Esther 1:10-19; 3:1-2; II Sam. 14:25; Ezek. 28:12-15; I Sam. 25:10-17; Luke 12:19-21; Dan. 4:30-37; Acts 12:20)
Social Pride – (Psa. 73:6,7; I Sam. 17:42; Luke 18:11; 12:19-21)

Consequence:
– Pride precedes almost every other sin and leads to
-Stumbling blocks – Mark 12:1-12
-Unanswered prayer – James 4:3; Acts 8:19-21
-Failure and Shame – Prov. 29:23; Dan. 4:28-33
-Sadness and poverty – Esther 6:4-13
-Destruction and death – Exo. 15:9-10; II Sam. 18:16

CONCLUSION:
CAUTION
– The humble is always exalted by God e.g.
Joseph – Gen. 40:8; 41:16
John the Baptist – John 3:13-15, 30
Mary – Luke 1:48
Jesus – Phil. 2:5-11
