INTRODUCTION:
We are continuing with our study on Growing like Him in Purity (Exo. 15:11; Isa. 6:3). In our last study, we covered two of the deadly sins – Pride and Anger. We shall continue with the study of these damning and dreadful sins.
III. JEALOUSY OR ENVY
Definition
– A feeling of resentment over another man’s superior attainment, endowments or possession. A desire to possess the goods of another which may lead to hatred or ill-will.
IT’S PECULIARITIES
– The first sin ever committed in heaven (Isa. 14:12-16)
–The first sin ever committed on earth (Gen. 3:4; Prov. 12:12)
–Universal and found in every field or profession of life (Matt. 27:18; Mark 15:10; Acts 8:1; 12:45)
–The very sin by which Jesus Christ was handed over for crucifixion (Mark 15:10)
*TYPES – Similar to pride.
CONSEQUENCE
–It is the most heinous sin of the flesh (Prov. 27:41; Rom. 1:29)
–Hidden envy in human’s heart not overcome leads to anger and death (Gen. 4:6-8; I Sam. 18:8)
–It destroys both physical and spiritual life (I Sam. 18:8-11; 22-25; 22:18-19)
–It robs of joy, happiness and contentment of life (Prov. 14:30; Esth. 7:10)
–It isolates from fellowship with God and men (Isa. 14:12-16; Gen. 4:5; 26:41).
–Like a boomerang weapon, it destroys the attacker more quickly than the attacked (Esther 7:10; Num. 16:3-5).
IV. COVETOUSNESS
This disease, like the previous ones, is equally deadly and damning (Gen. 13:10; Luke 12:16-20). Some people prefer mild names such as “errors” “mistakes” “weakness” or “inherent faults” for this deadly sin. Whichever name one calls it, COVETOUSNESS robs one of the kingdom of heaven (I Cor. 6:10).
Definition
– Strong desire to possess what belongs to another (Exo. 20:17). Uncontrollable passion to unreasonably or unlawfully possess excessively. Passion for acquiring and hoarding riches (Luke 12:16-20). Covetousness is a close relative to Avarice and is probably the parent of more evils than all other sins (I Tim. 6:10).
SOURCE
– It is inherent in us naturally (Gen. 13:10; Jer. 17:9; Matt. 15:19-20; Mark 7:21-23).
–It is aided by Satan or Devil and all his demonic allies (Gen. 3:6; Eph. 2:1-3). And the world (I John 2:15; Prov. 13:50).
–Lust of the eyes (Josh. 7:21) (2) Lust of the flesh (II Kings 5:20-21) (3) Pride of life (Gen. 3:6).
PECULIARITY
– Covetousness, like anger, is as much a part of the natural man as breathing (Jer. 6:13).
–From babyhood to old age, it motivates action and shapes behavioral pattern – children, young people and adults.
CONSEQUENCES
– It robs life of its beauty and radiance more than any other sin – Adam and Eve (Gen. 3:14-24).
–It plunges life into abject misery, and leads to robbery and murder (I Kings 21:19; Josh. 7:25-26; Luke 15:17).
–Like any sown seed, it brings forth plentiful in sour harvest, Joseph’s brethren. (Gen. 37:28). Lot (Gen. 19:26; 33-38). Gehazi (II Kings 5:27 and David II Sam. 18).
–It is rated as one of the vicious sins and sign of the last days (Rom. 1:29: 13:9; II Tim. 3:2; II Tim. 3:2; Luke 12:15).
–It robs its victims of the kingdom of heaven (I Cor. 6:10; Mark 8:36; Luke 16:19; I Sam. 25:11, 18).
CAUTION:
-Watch your “Heart” (Luke 21:34).
-Watch your “Eyes” (Luke 12:15; Gen. 13:10).
-Watch your “Attitude” (I Tim. 3:3; 6:11).
-Watch your “Appetite” (Phil. 3:9).
CURE: Acknowledge it as a heinous sin and confess it to Jesus (Prov. 28:13; I John 1:9).
Invite Jesus into your life (Rev. 3:20).
