INTRODUCTION: We are continuing with our study on Growing like Him in Purity (Exo. 15:11; Isa. 6:3). In our last study, we covered additional two more of the deadly sins: Jealousy, or Envy and Covetousness. We shall continue with the study of these damning and dreadful sins.
IMPURITY:
This most heinous and damning disease is the commonest sin and is very much associated with civilization.
Definition: The habit of men and women who are unclean, unholy and defiled whether spiritually, morally, socially and ceremonially (Jer. 17:9).
KINDS:
-Spiritual Impurity – Idolatry, defilement and drunkenness (I Cor. 6:9-10).
-Social Impurity – Corruption, Adultery, Homo-sexuality, Bestiality, and Idolatry (Ex. 20:13; 22:10; Lev. 18:22-23).
-Matrimonial Impurity – Fornication, Adultery, etc. (I Cor. 6:9-10).
ITS PECULIARITIES
The universal and most deadly disease is associated with modern civilization and is the very sin committed against one’s body.
CONSEQUENCES
Fornication, Adultery and Whoredom result in incurable veneral diseases which at times lead to childlessness and constant unsound health throughout one’s life.
-It results in divorces of marriages and ruins the future of innocent children of the marriage.
-It results in sudden death of many school girls and housewives in an attempt to abort unwanted pregnancies.
NATURE OF IMPURITY: Sin of impurity has these natures:
–It gives marks to all its victims just as slaves in the old days were identified by their masters’ marks.
–Drunkards have red eyes and big stomachs (Prov. 23:29-30).
– Smokers are known by their black lips while Indian hemp smokers behave most indecently (Prov. 23:31-35).
–Impurity disease mocks its victims (Gen. 9:21-23; Prov. 20:1; 14:9).
–It enslaves its victims e.g. Samson (Rom. 6:16).
CAUTION – Total abstinence from liquor (Prov. 23:31), flee fornication and adultery (I Cor. 6:8)
GLUTTONY AND DRUNKENNESS:
Gluttony and drunkenness are classified into category of the seven deadly sins as they are equally damning and heinous.
Definition: It is a habit of over-eating or eating to excess or over-filled with liquor (Prov. 23:21).
ITS SINFULNESS:
It defiles the body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 3:16; 6:19-20).
It is an expression of materialism (Luke 12:18-19; Matthew 6:31-33; Deut. 8:3).
It is turning aside of the natural God-given appetite (Prov. 23:21).
It is the exhibition or revelation of the human selfishness (I Sam. 25:10-11; 36-38; Amos 6:4-6; Prov. 23:29-30).
Great nations had been destroyed by sins of gluttony and drunkenness – e.g. Babylon (Dan. 5:30-31).
No drunkard or covetous man will inherit the kingdom of heaven (I Cor. 6:9-11).
ITS CAUSE
Indiscipline and indulgence – Esau (Gen. 25:29-34; I Kings 21:2-4; Prov. 1:9).
INTEMPERANCE – Noah (Gen. 9:21-24; 19:31-36; 25:29-34).
Bad Company (I Cor. 15:33).
CONSEQUENCES
i. Shame (Gen. 9:20-21; 19:31-36)
ii. Loss of Power (Matt. 17:21)
iii. Sadness (Gen. 27:34)
iv. Sickness (Prov. 23:34-35; Heb. 12:16-17)
v. Death (Deut. 21:20-21)
CURE:
1). Walk in the Spirit (Gal. 5:16)
2). Crucify the lusts of the flesh (Gal. 5:24).

– Christ is the answer to daily victorious living.
